Tucked away above a bustling street in the H St NE corridor, Toki Underground is a hidden gem for lovers of authentic Japanese ramen and inventive Asian fusion. This intimate noodle shop and family-friendly restaurant crafts an immersive dining experience that feels like a well-kept secret from Tokyo’s vibrant ramen scene. From the moment you ascend the stairs and settle into the cozy bar seating, you’re enveloped in a warm, underground vibe where great food and good company take center stage.
The menu at Toki Underground is a masterclass in balancing tradition with bold, modern flavors. Their Kimchi Ramen, rich with spicy pickled Napa cabbage and an umami-laden pork broth, delivers a savory punch that lingers on the palate. The soul-warming Toni Classic Ramen boasts a tonkotsu pork broth, tender braised chashu pork loin, and an onsen egg that gently melts into the broth, elevating every spoonful with creamy richness. For those seeking a gluten-free option, the thoughtfully prepared Gluten Free Classic Ramen swaps in Japanese yam noodles without sacrificing depth or complexity.
Small plates offer equally unforgettable indulgences. The Fried Chicken Steamed Buns pack a crispy, juicy bite softened by pillowy buns, accented with sweet chili sauce and fresh herbs, while the Kimchi Pork Dumplings balance tangy fermented flavors with succulent pork filling. If you’re a fan of bold cocktails and spirits, you won’t want to miss their carefully curated Whiskey Flight or the refreshingly sharp Whiskey and Vodka Grapefruit Cocktail, which add a sophisticated complement to the meal.
What sets Toki Underground apart isn’t just the food—it’s the atmosphere and intimate scale of the space. With only about 15 seats arranged along a sleek bar, the setting encourages connection and conversation against a backdrop of a stellar playlist that customers rave about. The welcoming, knowledgeable staff elevate the experience with friendly service that feels both effortless and attentive. As one guest noted, the vibe is “authentically Japanese,” reminiscent of the beloved ramen bars in Japan, while others appreciate the “underground” theme and the sense of being part of something special.
Though the restaurant’s modest size and somewhat hidden location mean you’ll want to plan ahead or arrive early, those who do are rewarded with a dining experience that feels like a delicious discovery. Whether you’re craving a steaming bowl of perfectly crafted ramen, crispy kumara wings, or expertly mixed sake flights, Toki Underground delivers flavors that delight the senses and a setting that invites you to savor every bite and moment.
For lovers of Japanese cuisine, noodle connoisseurs, or anyone seeking a distinctive and soulful meal in Washington, DC, Toki Underground promises a memorable underground culinary adventure that keeps guests coming back again and again.
Damn good ramen!! Blink and you’ll miss it though. Their space is small and hidden, it’s attached to what looked like a different restaurant but Toki is to the left up the stairs. Also note, they only have bar seating. But go for their food, service and vibe!! The server/bartender were super cool and I personally loved their playlist there. And if you’re craving hot noods (Noodles) they’ve got that too. I had their numbing ramen and it did exactly that, numb my taste buds but like in the best way. We lucked out and went during their happy hour so food was discounted. They’ve also got some fun non-alcoholic options. 10/10
Toki Underground completely lives up to the hype. When you read this is the best Japanese food or the best ramen in DC, it’s not a marketing ploy. This place is truly off the charts. It’s very much a hidden gem: no sign outside, on the second floor, and only about 15 seats total. The space is tiny with all counter-style seating, elbow-to-elbow, which makes it perfect for singles or couples but definitely not ideal for groups. Food and drinks came out fast. Service was friendly and quick, though we did feel a little rushed despite not lingering. For example, we were never asked if we wanted a second drink, and the check was dropped without asking about dessert. A few missed upsell opportunities. Still, our server was warm and efficient overall. To drink, I ordered the Toki Monster, which was excellent. It’s made with peach-infused Japanese whiskey, peach oleo, Sichuan oil, and comes with a piece of smoked pork belly. For an appetizer, we shared the fried chicken steam buns and they were incredible. The chicken was perfectly crispy, and the combination of mayo, sweet chili sauce with a bit of heat, pickles, cilantro, and basil worked beautifully together. For my ramen, I ordered the Toki Classic, and it absolutely blew me away. The pork bone broth was rich and deeply flavorful, paired with pulled pork, scallions, kale, an onsen egg, pickled ginger, garlic, and chili oil. Every bite was incredible, and the portion was very generous. This is, without question, the best ramen I’ve ever had. It is the kind of dish you keep thinking about long after you leave. The food alone makes Toki Underground a must-visit. I’ll be craving that ramen for a long time, and I already can’t wait to go back.
Toki Underground was a great little find. I had the ramen, which was flavorful and well-balanced, though I personally wish it had packed a bit more heat. The style and vibe of the restaurant really stood out, authentically Japanese and reminded me of ramen bars I visited in Japan. It’s small and cozy, kind of a hole-in-the-wall spot, but that’s what gives it its charm. The waiter was friendly and attentive, and it wasn’t too crowded when I went, which made for a relaxed, easygoing meal. Definitely worth a visit if you’re craving ramen with a laid-back, Tokyo-style atmosphere.
Came here without an reservation but after a short waiting time we sat down at the bar. Very friendly staff - excellent cocktails (try the one with the bacon - it’s absolutely worth it). The food is also very good :) really good ramen place!
We really enjoyed the vibe there. It does feel “underground “ theme even it’s at the second floor. It’s like bar seating style. Their Ramen noodles soup was very creative and the fired chicken was absolutely delicious and impressive. Love all the Japanese beer options and we will definitely back again
The steam bun with fried chicken and the root beer chicken wings are both delicious. The fried chicken curry ramen and the numbing garlic ramen are both okay. The pork insides the numbing garlic ramen is delicious tho. The vibe is great. There are not many seats, and there are also no tables, so it’s more suitable for single customers or couples vs. a 3+ people gathering. Overall, it’s a nice experience.
